The noise level of high speed motorboats is restricted since this year. For engines with internal exhaust this means that the engine producer has conducted the noise tests to make sure that the noise level of their engines are within the maximum limits of 75 Decibels.
But many engines are provided with external exhausts, where the boat builder has to design and install their own exhaust system. For these boats it is the responsibility of the boat builder to make sure that the noise level of the engine in combination with the exhaust system is within the noise limits.
The test procedure is simple. The boat has to pass a microphone under certain conditions at full speed, within the distance of 25 metres. The sound level during this test may not exceed the following requirement:
| Single engine power in kW |
Maximum Sound Pressure level = LpASmax (in dB) |
| PN < 10 |
67 |
| 10 < PN < 40 |
72 |
| PN > 40 |
75 |
For twin-engine and multiple-engine units of all engine types an allowance of 3 dB may be applied.
where P = rated engine power in kW at rated speed and LpASmax = maximum sound pressure level in dB.
With the noise testing graphs you can find out if noise testing is required for your boat. Please feel free to contact one of the ECB surveyors to check if sound tests are required for your boat.
